What Should be Required of a CompTIA Network+ Practice Test?
Updated: 02/22-2021
A) First is First: Follow the Exam Objectives
This is the first commandment in our Ten Commandments to IT Cert Prep. You can’t embark on meaningful Network+ practice tests without first starting by mastering the Network+ N10-007 exam objectives.
B) It should be Software Based
Why? Because you need an actual exam simulation. Since the test at Pearson/VUE is administered on a computer, only software will be able to meaningfully replicate that experience for you. This will entail navigation in the practice test software that replicates the navigation at the testing center. It will also include the same number of questions per practice test as there are at the actual exam. The practice test timer set at the actual exam duration, etc. In short, a good Network+ practice test will allow you to first “pass the test from the comfort of your home”.
C) It should offer Performance-Based Questions
Here is another reason you need your Network+ practice test to be software-based. The CompTIA Network+ exam includes performance-based questions. To be fully ready for the actual exam it is very helpful if you have navigated through both the software and the thought processes that will help you succeed at these questions. Your practice test software should have several of these types of questions. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the image, it will take you to a narrated and explained example of a Network+ performance-based question in CertBlaster.
D) It should offer a lot of questions
Because “practice makes perfect” you need your practice tests to include large numbers of questions. The more questions there are the later rote memorization will take over your test preparation. Remember rote memorization of answers will make you fail the test. Why? Because when you work that way you are not learning the fundamental knowledge behind the exam objectives and any little change in the formulation of the question at the exam will through you off. People that “learn all the answers by heart” fail at the exam. If it was as easy as that then the exam would not be worth anything in terms of ascertaining how well the candidate would do on the job with all unexpected situations that will occur there.
E) It should offer a lot of feedback
You should not only get an overall score on your practice tests but also a breakdown of how you did at each exam objective. You should get answers but also explanations and enough reports that you will be properly guided as to what to do next. The practice test software must provide not only the guidance but also the tools necessary to remediate based on that guidance. This is how you will know if you are really ready for the exam or not.
